Breast Surgeries are typically of the following three types

Breast Reconstruction

Breast Reconstruction is a surgery performed to regenerate the breast/s to its natural curvature and volume. The nipple and areola can also be recreated as desired.

This surgery usually involves multiple procedures like a flap reconstruction surgery and implantation or reduction that are performed in steps to achieve the desired outcome.

Who does it?

This surgery is recommended for women who have undergone a Mastectomy as a treatment for Breast Cancer. Breast Reconstruction may also be performed after a Lumpectomy or any trauma where the breast loses its original appearance.

What are the risks involved?

  • An adverse reaction to anesthesia.
  • Infection around the operated area
  • Bleeding or bruising in the area of surgery and area from where the tissue was taken.
  • Chronic pain and discomfort
  • Keloid Scars – Scars that do not heal with time and medication
  • Seroma or fluid build-up in the operated area

Breast Augmentation Or Augmentation Mammoplasty

Breast Augmentation is done to improve the look and shape of breasts.

This surgery involves placing implants made of a silicone shell filled with saline or silicone gel under or over a chest muscle through an incision made in the armpit, areola or below the breast fold.

Who does it?

Over time, breasts lose their shape and elasticity. This surgery is opted for by women who wish to reconstruct and redefine their breasts to a youthful contour due to various physical, emotional and physiological reasons.

For example, mothers eager to regain their original size post pregnancy and/or breastfeeding, breast cancer survivors and others who desire a voluptuous and beguiling profile.

What are the risks involved?

  • Capsular Contracture – The scar tissue may distort the shape of the implant.
  • Pain in the breasts.
  • Infection.
  • Changes in sensation and numbness around the nipple and breast.
  • Implant may rupture or its position may change in time

Correcting the above complications will require additional medical procedures to replace or remove the implants

Breast Reduction Or Reduction Mammoplasty

Breast Reduction Surgery is performed to remove excess fat, skin and tissue from the breasts and attain a breast size that is in proportion to the body.

Who does it?

Women with large and heavy breasts who experience discomfort like chronic back and neck pain, restricted physical activities, sleep disruptions and poor self-image are the ones who opt for this surgery.
